Cyber Crime Time elearning game

Cyber crime is a hot topic that is not cooling down. Indeed, all the indications are it is getting hotter and hotter, so it is a timely release from imc of an elearning game – Cyber Crime Time.

Cyber security training is probably the number one learning requirement of most organisations at present, and looks to stay that way in our view.

Here at Learning Light, when working for clients we have been asked to complete their in-house cyber security courses. We have also helped select cyber crime courses for a number of our clients.

While all the cyber security training we have seen have been worthy courses in addressing this very real scourge and threat to businesses, it is our view that the approach all too often adopted is one of preaching and being over prescriptive. This often results in pushback from learners.

So it is refreshing to take a cyber security course that offers a very different perspective ….one of a game with attitude, and Cyber Crime Time from imc is just that… a learning game with a plot and purpose.

Cyber security elearning scenarios

I really enjoyed taking this course and I found that I learnt something, instead of just being told something. I really do not want to spoil your fun, as yes this is a game and yes, it is freely available to take on a demo basis courtesy of imc.

So what should I tell you about Cyber Crime Time… the game? Well, this game turns the tables and you, my friend, the learner becomes the hacker. Well, trainee-hacker and your cyber crime time is spent learning all about hacking a corporate entity.

Learn to prevent hacking in this course

In short, you become a lot wiser about how hacking is carried out by cyber criminals and an awful lot wiser about how you can prevent yourself and your employer becoming a victim of cyber crime.

It really is a very clever approach that has been very well thought through by some smart learning designers.

Naturally as you would expect from imc, the game is very well produced and it comes with some nice and interesting twists and turns. I can assure you that the overall tone quickly draws you into this shadowy world.

The game play includes planning and executing a variety of cyber crimes from Phishing to Vishing as you seek to gain unauthorised entry to a large organisation.

Training in avoiding phishing and vishing

The games narrative is nicely judged with some humour alongside a layer of malevolent intent as you look for weaknesses in individuals’ behaviour and organisations procedures. You are presented with the chance to indulge in your own opportunistic side hustle as well.

This is not ethical hacking!

As an approach to raising awareness of cyber crime across an organisation, this game works. Engagement is designed in almost immediately and challenges are quickly presented.

Choices need to be made as information is provided about the techniques available as a scenario is presented. The player is assessing the scenario opportunity and the potential gullibility of the characters in making a move.

Cyber crime game based learning

Hacking doesn’t always work, but these are the type of situations that must keep IT security professionals awake at night.

Naturally, being a game, you can replay and choose different options and items from your hacker’s toolkit. To help you understand the types of each item in the toolkit there is some very useful information provided.

If we take malware for example, there is a clear explanation of the different types of malicious software available, and an example of what damage these programs can do.

Learn to prevent malicious software attacks

In this scenario, the damage WannaCry did across the world is the case in point.

You will no doubt be pleased to know that that there is also advice provided in how to defeat and protect yourself from malware (as there is for all the options that make up the hacker’s toolkit). It is these countermeasures that are deployed in the gameplay that go to make this game a thoroughly compelling experience.

So, a really welcome addition to the library of elearning that is addressing cyber security.

Play the game for free here, as well as learning about the low-cost business licences, offering great value for training employees and protecting your organisation.

The Learning Light e-Learning Content Evaluation Tool has been developed to provide an objective means of evaluating elearning and providing buyers with data-driven online course reviews.

The team at Learning Light was often asked by clients “How do I know if an elearning course is any good?”

Learning Light undertook several commissions from clients to evaluate elearning courses, and this led to the development of firstly a methodology and now the e-LCET tool to objectively evaluate online training.

You can view some of our e-LCET reviews here:

Improving a Negative Attitude Course Review

Business Game Course Review

City & Guilds Kineo eLearning Course Review

Methodology

The initial inspiration was based around elearning guru Michael Allen’s Objectives X Treatment matrix. This simple matrix looks at the learning objectives and the elearning interactions that could be applied to create engaging and effective elearning.

The e-LCET tool focuses firmly on the learner experience of an elearning course and how this relates to the course’s design. We firstly look at the Genres involved in the course, and secondly we evaluate these genres against 129 data points.

e-LCET then presents graphical evaluations of the ‘genre mix’ that makes up the course and a set of objective measurements against the criteria relevant to the course, producing a spider-gram:

Online course reviews - elearning content evaluation tool

and a pie chart:

e-learning content evaluation Pie Chart

e-LCET is now a very capable tool that does much much more than the spreadsheet driven process for course reviews that it replaces. It is configurable to allow the evaluation of all genres of elearning materials, videos, games, animations and recognizes accessibility issues as well.

It is also smart and flexible enough to allow the materials to be rated against realistic standards to reflect real world budgets.

Applications

Our mission has been to ensure any buyer that the materials marketed by Learning Light are of an appropriate standard and will deliver effective and engaging elearning.

There are a growing number of e-learning content exchanges but to our knowledge none take the trouble to curate and evaluate the content sold at the level of detail Learning Light does.

We have also used e-LCET to evaluate elearning courses from other vendors and organisations as an independent third party.

If you would like us to review your courses, or to review a vendor’s courses as part of a procurement exercise, please contact us.

Any course which is evaluated by e-LCET and given a good score receives a Learning Light seal of approval:

LL TICk

We believe the use of e-LCET for online course reviews will grow to support the procurement of bespoke elearning content. The ability of organisations to translate requirements into more detailed specifications for vendors to develop content against has proven challenging to many organisations or departments new to procuring elearning.

In addition many developers have been frustrated with customers who are unable to clearly articulate their requirements or continue to make change requests throughout the development process as the e-learning courseware development unfolds. Using e-LCET to understand what makes good elearning and even scope projects will be of great value.

Developing Management Talent is a new elearning course developed by Judith Elliott – a very knowledgeable HR professional who works with some of the UK’s leading organisations, including law firms, tech firms and universities.

Management training company elconsulting

Judith leads elconsulting and she and her team have put together a very modern online learning programme of 10 modules that include high-impact videos, tests and assessments, learning resources and online coaching sessions. I get the impression Judith is on a mission to improve managerial skills wherever managers are – at home, in the office or on the move.

High-Quality, Video-Based Scenarios

The modules are cleverly designed and will appeal to those stepping up to be a manager and take responsibility for having those “less than easy” conversations with members of their team, with such modules as How to Give Feedback or How to Manage Performance Effectively. The modules offer high quality video-based scenarios that really impact and provide tools and techniques to support a manager to do this to the best effect.

To those managers who have been in post for a time, do not dismiss these modules as being just for newbie managers, they most certainly are not. Some of the videos are spine tinglingly accurate and will certainly engender self-reflection… “am I like that?” … “that’s not me…is it?”.

Well, now there is an opportunity to up your game and develop your management talent and add new techniques to your team leading, reflecting the difficult times we live in.

Timely Training for Remote Work & Change Management

Judith and team have recognised that the workplace is changing and there are some very pertinent modules in the collection: How to Manage People During ChangeHow to Manage Remote Performance and The 7 Critical Success Factors for Managing Remote Teams. As we noted above, Judith is on a mission to improve managerial skills wherever managers are and this type of approach is needed by managers more than ever.

This is a powerful solution of 10 topics, each addressed as a standalone unit, but incorporating the expertise that comes from elconsulting which is clear to see from the videos through to the resources, plus the opportunity to have 2 two-hour group coaching sessions with one of elconsulting’s expert coaches. Learners can email tutors directly and can also use the community discussions and posts to communicate with peers to share ideas and experiences.

The whole solution has been packaged up into a “turnkey” offer with elconsulting setting up an LMS partition for you (with your own branding for a small extra fee), enrolling the learners, managing their progress with emails and reminders (you can do this yourself if you wish as well) through to delivering certificates. elconsulting will send monthly reports as well.

In Summary: Well-Designed eLearning from Expert Coaches

There is a lot to like with these courses. They are well-designed and well thought through, as they come from absolute experts in this field of developing management talent. They offer engagement with community discussions and real live coaching sessions with professional coaches.

The courses can be taken in whatever order you the learner desires. The LMS powering them is easy and intuitive to use, tracking your progress and keeping you informed of where you are.

The licence is for 12 months for the full 10 courses and comes in at £250.00 per person. In our view that is good value as you get high impact videos, resources and checklists, tutor support and 2 hours of expert online coaching… all built for the changed workscape we find ourselves in today.

Trainer Bubble Review: eLearning Courses & Training Resources to Build Workforce Skills https://www.learninglight.com/trainer-bubble-review/ https://www.learninglight.com/trainer-bubble-review/#respond Wed, 25 Mar 2020 18:44:05 +0000 https://www.learninglight.com/?p=5060 David's review of Trainer Bubble - an interesting training and elearning development company here in the UK, and we were quite intrigued to learn more about them.

The post Trainer Bubble Review: eLearning Courses & Training Resources to Build Workforce Skills appeared first on Learning Light.

]]>
I was lucky enough to come across Trainer Bubble recently and be given the chance to review a number of their courses, which we will come onto in a moment.

Trainer Bubble is an interesting training and elearning development company here in the UK, and I was quite intrigued to learn more about them.

Trainer Bubble review - elearning courses

eLearning is just one part of Trainer Bubble, and the element we have looked at in more detail, but there is a host of learning resources such as videos and training course materials available on their website.

There are also a number of free resources including the ADDIE model used in training design and in particular in designing elearning, which made me smile.

Others include 70 20 10 and the GROW model, all available as free downloads, mainly in PowerPoint.

So, let’s take a look at some of the elearning courses available from Trainer Bubble.

We looked at 4 specific elearning courses: Delegation, The Virtual Leader, Unconscious Bias, and Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.

These courses are off the shelf and therefore suitable for any organisation to use. There’s even the option of adapting them to suit specific requirements. Let’s be clear, while they do use video and animation very effectively, they are not micro-learning courses.

Instead, they are compelling courses divided up into chapters with very good learning design to deliver engagement and maintain interest.

These can be used in our opinion as online courses, resources or part of a blended learning provision.

Delegation

Delegation is a very good course, as it designed to be purposeful and practical. A learner is given a very useful set of tools and techniques meaning they can put into practice what they have learnt quickly and easily.

Delegating course

The delegation course is designed to build as you progress, and illustrates the approaches needed and how to use them in the workplace. The menu is effective. While initially I anticipate the learner would approach this course in a linear learning approach, the nice, clean menu allows this course to become a resource or toolkit (this is made particularly pertinent due to the unlimited licence model from Trainer Bubble).

The course offers a certificate and is CPD verified. Useful, but it is much more useful than just as a course to complete and move on. This course really acts as a resource and something to go back to time and time again to refine the art of delegation. Ideal for new managers and not so new managers.

The production values are good, navigation fine, with no distractions and needless animations or misguided attempts at overproduction. Clear and purposeful, just like delegation should be.

The Virtual Leader

This is a hot topic and Trainer Bubble have clearly put a lot of thought into developing this course. There is compelling use of video that has been very well scripted and professionally acted to bring realism to this very interesting topic that many organisations and their employees wrestle with.

Leading virtual teams

The learning designer and subject matter expert appeared to have worked together exceptionally well on The Virtual Leader course.

There is a backbone video thread of a newly created virtual team coming together with their manager and the manager’s boss / coach working through the issues faced with the team as it gets to grips with working virtually and working for a virtual manager.

The narrative is nicely done, the video well made and tools and techniques presented are practical and purposeful (that seems to me to be the Trainer Bubble approach).

The learner can use downloads/workbooks to start evaluating situations they face making – (as I keep saying) this learning is very practical and part of the day to day. This is not simple watch and walk away when finished learning, as it’s much more participatory than that and does well as a generic piece of elearning to feel so personalised to the learner.

The workbook approach is well integrated, and tips and techniques have clearly been very well researched.

Video production values are excellent, language is clear, tonality is good and therefore clarity of message is achieved. I felt the learner was being taken by the hand through this course in a supportive tutored way.

Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking

This was a little bit of a tough watch in parts and obviously deliberately so, as this learning is designed to raise awareness and make people notice what is going on in our society. The case study narratives of victims of modern slavery and human trafficking certainly did that.

Modern slavery and human trafficking

I feel this is a difficult subject to address in the 21st century, but in their Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking course, Trainer Bubble does well to put into context and highlight individual and organisational responsibilities now in place due to the legislation passed in 2015.

The learning has a strong call to action theme and it is therefore more than click through and complete elearning. Another well designed piece, with good use of video and interactivity throughout the learning this is pretty well tested by the multiple choice questions.

Again, as in all the Trainer Bubble courses we looked at the production values are excellent and the learning designer working with the subject matter expert appears to be working well.

Unconscious Bias

This is a tough topic to address as it is full of nuances and possible pitfalls for any organisation or individual.

Unconscious bias training

The use of video in this unconscious bias course is exemplary in how the nuances are put forward and the learner made to think about difficult situations and circumstances.

Underlying this is a layer of practicality to give learners a toolkit and reference points on which they can build their understanding up from, and then modify their behaviour and others (through calling out) as their confidence grows.

The trainer notes are a key addition to this course and serve a hugely useful purpose. Indeed, this course could be used as a self-directed course, but would benefit with learners submitting materials or it could form the backbone of a blended learning course in which it would be hugely effective.

The chapter model would work exceptionally well in this course in a learning lab or training room environment.

This is without doubt a tough topic to get over, and this course from Training Bubble is effective as it is multi-dimensional in showing the domain from multiple perspectives, explaining both causal factors and correlations of data that can lead to false assumptions.

Accordingly, learners are required to ponder and consider circumstances that are difficult and consider how they will go about changing their biases that have been surfaced in this course.

However, this course from Trainer Bubble, while challenging and questioning at first, follows through strongly with the toolkit and approaches to help learners put the learning into practice. It does that very well indeed, with good pace and strong production values.

To sum up

Here at Learning Light we look at a lot of content on behalf of our clients who are selecting libraries of learning for their organisation, but it is always nice to have the chance to simply share our views on some effective elearning from a nice company with our website readers.

This is good, well-made elearning that is purposeful and practical and will help any organisation build the skills of its workforce effectively.

An e-LCET review of the Greenline Conversations elearning course

The Greenline Conversations course teaches the learner about relationships and conversations in the workplace. It focuses on how to have effective conversations which achieve shared goals, and avoid having time-wasting conversations which are not productive.

To provide this understanding the Greenline course uses coaching techniques and psychological research via audio, video, illustrations and knowledge-reinforcement tests to provide a genuinely interesting and useful piece of high-level learning.

The course has been in development for 5 years and has been adapted from a traditional classroom environment. It is a tried and tested piece of extremely effective learning.

Greenline Conversations Genre MixGline Genre Pie

To begin an e-LCET review we look at the genres which make up an elearning course. This helps to provide users with an understanding of how the course will be presented, and if it will be effective for them.

It also provides a useful way to judge the quality of course: if a course contains a lot of video and receives a high score for its video content, then this demonstrates that the course is good quality.

The pie chart represents the mix of genres used in the Greenlines Conversations course.

The Greenline Conversations course focuses on audio and video, often using a presenter to convey information. As the information and terminology used in the course is complex, this is an effective method of presentation as it is clear and easy to understand.

The course also uses testing, or knowledge checks, to great effect to reinforce the teaching presented in each module. There are 8 modules in total and a knowledge check follows each one.

There are also application exercises for the learner to apply, and thereby reinforce, their learning by using it in their workplace.

Greenline Conversations Evaluation

Gline scores

Once we have identified the genres used in an elearning course, stage two of the e-LCET process is to uses a series of detailed metrics to provide a score for each genre. The total scores out of 6 for each genre are shown above and, as you can see, the Greenline Conversations course scores highly in its principal genres of Audio, Video, Text, Assessment and Links.

As these principal genres make up most of the Greenline course, and they each score highly, we know that the Greenline course is a quality piece of learning.

The Greenline course scored so highly because it uses a variety of simple yet extremely effective presentation techniques. By using a video presenter with quality audio, complemented by illustrations and mini-games, each module conveys the learning involved successfully. The assessment and resources which supplement and reinforce this learning are also pedagogically sound, and this combination provides the Greenline course with excellent scores in the evaluation stage of the e-LCET review.

We can also use a spidergram to provide a visual representation of the scores for the Greenline course.

Gline eval spider

As the Greeline course is effective, engaging elearning we can give it the Learning Light seal of approval and our recommendation.

In Good Company is leadership development training designed to improve productivity, talent and customer service – delivered via elearning videos. In this learning content review, we found the videos to be highly engaging – which shouldn’t come as a big surprise as In Good Company is developed by The Engagement Coach.

Leadership development training - In Good Company

Here’s what David Patterson had to say about this excellent training for taking managers and learners on journey to improve Leadership Skills, Team Performance and Customer Experience:

In Good Company – Netflix-style quality video, designed to deliver employee engagement

Subtext…..the future is around Employee Net Engagement Scores and xAPI

I was lucky enough to talk with Amrit Sandhar recently about the elearning video series he has developed, called In Good Company.

However, we began by talking about Learner Engagement and Amrit’s views on this topic, which were fascinating.

As we all know, Learner Engagement is one of the most discussed issues in modern workplace learning at present, and one that the L&D industry continuously frets about. Huge effort is made to understand why learners will or won’t engage with learning programmes. It is no secret that some elearning programmes achieve woeful levels of engagement.

Well, it appears Amrit is on a mission to deal with this, but he starts with a fabulous concept from the world of customer satisfaction and brings it to employee satisfaction. That is the Net Promoter Score.

Net Promoter or Net Promoter Score (NPS) is a management tool that can be used to gauge the loyalty of a firm’s customer relationships. It serves as an alternative to traditional customer satisfaction research and claims to be correlated with revenue growth.

NPS has been widely adopted, with more than two thirds of Fortune 1000 companies using the metric.

Net Promoter Score is a customer loyalty metric developed by (and a registered trademark of) Fred Reichheld, Bain & Company, and Satmetrix. It was introduced by Reichheld in his 2003 Harvard Business Review article “One Number You Need to Grow”. NPS can be as low as −100 (everybody is a detractor) or as high as +100 (everybody is a promoter). An NPS that is positive (ie higher than zero) is felt to be good, and an NPS of +50 is excellent.

Net Promoter Score (NPS) aims to measure the loyalty that exists between a provider and a consumer. The provider can be a company, employer or any other entity. The provider is the entity that is asking the questions on the NPS survey. The consumer is the customer, employee, or respondent to an NPS survey.

The step to Employee Net Promoter Score (ENPS) was an obvious move and this is where The Engagement Coach is coming from. They have built some serious expertise in understanding and analysing employee attitudes, coupled with their own consultancy expertise delivered into several large UK corporates. The focus is on employee engagement with the organisation.

While The Engagement Coach offers high impact face to face training, they have invested heavily in producing some very high impact and engaging video learning materials called In Good Company. A clever title indeed. This is all about the mission to deliver engagement, and the materials certainly live up to the premise.

There is a whole series of short 20 minute video clips built around the interactions of a sales manager and his team in a typical UK organisation. It would be unfair to say this is a rip off of The Office, as the approach is quite different when you get into the materials. What is fair to say is that the production values and the acting are of The Office’s standard, though the faces are a lot less famous.

Engaging Video eLearning Content

The production values are as noted quite excellent, but the contextual narrative just resonates beautifully in my view to the issues in many teams in many organisations.

It is a very clever trick to take something that is generic in its approach and make it relevant to so many organisations, but In Good Company pulls that trick off quite superbly, and here is why:

The video modules are built of three different components. Firstly, a very true to life scenario, such as a sales meeting. This is followed by the issues being dissected by a behavioural expert who looks at the patterns of behaviours with an objective eye and then by a workplace engagement expert who highlights the very real downsides of the behavioural dynamics observed, which consequently will lead to actively disengaged employees, and consequently lead to other side effects such as stress and the resultant time off work.

The injection of expertise is sobering, and while the overall scenarios are not played for laughs, they really do resonate and replicate the real world with a wry sense of the reality of the everyday. However, the expert analysis has impact.

The narrative overall is strong and the third component is an interview with two of the lead participants of the scenario. This is reflective and insightful, and adds depth to the narrative and a degree of learner anticipation, and excitement to watch the next episode is created to good effect by The Engagement Coach team.

The Engagement Coach

I am told, and can quite believe, that the next video in the series is eagerly awaited by the course participants. Unlike with Netflix, learners are not permitted to binge on the courses one after another.

I have no doubt that the video courses, when delivered by The Engagement Coach as part of a blended programme, have great effect, and this is backed up by the company’s own follow-up with their customers. Among managers who attended, 75% reported positive behaviour change within their teams when surveyed 17 months later (443 respondents). This is both reassuring and extremely impressive.

The opportunity for their usage however is now being opened up, and a project to provide the videos with a SCORM wrap is well under way (xAPI Tin Can learning statements to follow no doubt). This will allow the courses to be licensed to companies to use in their LMS and become building blocks of courses with additional assessments and activities curated in house by L&D teams.

The next step is to Employee Net Engagement Scores (ENES). This is where we are heading in my view, and xAPI is going to be key in making this understandable metric become a reality. xAPI will be able to collect a large number of learning activities that are real changes in attitudes and behaviours. Too often in my view, issues with Learner Engagement are seen in isolation. The issue is more complex and learning is part of the solution to the wider issue of engagement in an organisation.

To me, this whole approach to engagement is hugely exciting as engagement experts such as Amrit Sandhar and his team bring their expertise to market as digital learning to really deal with the issue of employee engagement.

60 second chef course review

This cooking skills series of 60 second videos has been curated by Virtual College and short knowledge retention checks have been made to maximise the impact and effectiveness of the videos.

The videos, while delivering a standalone learning experience (in yes, just 60 seconds), are cleverly constructed to offer a defined learning pathway to build technical culinary skills. This is not a recipe service, but a slick and simple skills building solution encompassing culinary skills, food safety and preparation, and nutrition.

The videos are short and engaging and made to the highest production standards, focusing on the steps to culinary success. They are very well narrated and an excellent example of micro-learning in action.

Microsoft Excel (and spreadsheets in general) is one of the most used and least understood of all the productivity tools we have at our fingertips. This chart from BIS tells us as much:

IT Skills Survey

So we have a large number of employees with skills shortages and a large number of employers wondering what is the best way of dealing with this very specific skills deficit.

With multiple Excel skills courses available (via elearning and in the classroom), and even more books available, it is hard to believe that there is a gap in the market for another set of Excel courses.

But there most certainly is and what makes this provision from Filtered so interesting is that it is using Adaptive learning to address Excel skills. This has 2 very clearly defined benefits:

Firstly, the course is tailored very effectively to the learner’s needs and aspirations and secondly by so doing saves considerable time and therefore money.

So there you have it: adaptive learning equals personalisation and time saving. But does it really work? The answer is an unequivocal ‘yes’.

Our evaluation began by taking the initial assessment and as part of this process we set our aspirations as an Excel user. Shortly after we were undertaking the pre-assessment question sets.

What can you say about a set of questions addressing your MS Excel skills? From a learning design process it became clear that a considerable amount of thought had gone into the questions, and they came from all angles. The questions are designed to test your current knowledge of Excel and, on the basis of your answers, filter out the learning modules which you will not teach you something new.

As user numbers have contributed to the accuracy with which Filtered can assess your skills and ambitions, the pre-assessment questions have improved and improved, and the Filtered team is now reporting 95% accuracy in terms of question-ability matching at this stage, which is impressive.

The tests are effective and vary in their approach, and the answers are multiple choice.

There are a number of small overview tours of Filtered to get learners acquainted with the interface and how it works, but in reality the interface is well designed and very intuitive indeed.

The course is broken down into units and modules, with the differing units having various numbers of modules.filtered3

The Filtered board shows dynamically which units have been selected, completed and the time required to complete the course… nice to know! I had 92 modules to take with 67 filtered out by the pre-assessment questions, so you can see the savings in time quite clearly.

As the approach suggests this about understanding what you know as well as what you don’t know about Excel. This is the filter and where your personal learning journey is set and the time saved.

However, it is important to note that the learner does not lose any control over the materials and can elect to pass over certain modules offered or indeed choose modules that have not been offered. Learner control is of course important and here the Filtered algorithm is now assessing its initial accuracy and updating itself.

Again we are impressed as to the learning design applied to the modules, particularly given the constraints of the training required. The course uses exercises that are downloaded to allow practical work to be undertaken that offers reasonably realistic representations of tasks undertaken in Excel.

Modules then complete with a downloadable file to practise on and the option to say “I’ve completed the module” “I’d like to come back to the module” or “I’ll filter it out!”

The modules are self-contained and can be completed quite quickly, as they are designed to be task orientated.

I found the setup modules very useful and quickly transferred what I had learnt from the exercise on setting up the ribbon to my own iteration of Excel I use every day.

Naturally Filtered effectively tracks my progress, allows me to pause and re-start the learning.

Tracking of Microsoft Excel learning

This is not a casual experience; it is in-depth learning and a degree of learner motivation is required as Excel is an extremely complex piece of productivity software which must be treated with respect if you are to leverage its full potential. For the record, it is believed that 40% of all Excel spreadsheets contain errors.

This is not passive learning either – concentration is required to grasp the concepts from the text and screenshot illustrations, and then work through the exercise on the downloaded sheet to prepare for the test and put the learning into practice by customising your own iteration of Excel in light of what you have learnt.

Summary

It is great to see some practical use of adaptive learning for the workplace. In our Filtered Excel course review, we found that the training delivers on several levels. It saves both employees and employers time by customising the learning experience to the desired skills and outcome based on the initial assessment. This prevents whole days being wasted on MS Excel courses in classrooms where some learning is already in place and very quickly some is forgotten.

The learning is very well designed and learners are quickly able to put the skills gained into practice in the workplace, often then and there. Reporting is simple and effective, and the flexibility on offer creates a performance and productivity enhancement experience, rather than a simple course.

The excellent use of images and a striking layout immediately draws the learner to engage and the well designed learning metaphors will continue to deliver engagement. Navigation is well thought through giving the learner real control and taking this learning beyond the “page turners”. The audio is used judiciously along with the animation, and together they deliver a good learning experience.

The subject matter expertise of the organisation shines through and has been presented very clearly and succinctly.
